ladies and gentlemen,

we engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast. we are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry. take my major telecommunications for example. scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. but without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far. funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. so the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.

but the power of Knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in the full community of learning. walking around campus i absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgrounds. the engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts. how wonderful that is! that, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture.

知識的融合和人才的全面發展

我們理工科的學生都知道科技在以一種難以置信的速度變化發展着。我們都在緊張和嚴肅地思考着是否我們的大學能夠爲我們提供一個適應當前工業需要的知識基礎。以我的專業通信工程爲例,科學家們說21世紀是生物醫學的世紀,而不是電氣電子的世紀。但是如果沒有電子化的數據處理和轉換,生物醫學時代就不能發展。有趣的是:“生物醫學”這個詞本身就是兩個學科的結合,所以跨學科的開發手段就成了電氣電子領域以及其他任何領域尋找新出路的關鍵。

但是知識的結合不僅僅侷限在科學和工程中,而是在任何的學習中。徜徉在校園裏,我看到了這樣一個事實:理工科學生們在哲學講座上討論得熱火朝天,在演講俱樂部裏激情地演說,在歷史和藝術裏尋找着閃光的思想。太棒了!朋友們,這就是我們能夠全面發展的重要一步,因爲當我們跳出自己的圈子時,我們能看到更大的圖畫。

Knowledge, skill and abilitydistinguished judges, ladies and gentlemen:

good morning/afternoon!

i’m very glad to stand here and the topic of my speech is “Knowledge, skill and ability”. when i first saw this big topic, i felt puzzled, as i didn’t know how to start my speech. to think it over and over, and finally i got a clue. as far as i am concerned, Knowledge, skill and ability are of equal importance, and they are closely related to each other.

first, learning Knowledge is the precondition of the development of a person’s ability. we believe that “Knowledge is power”, and it is often said that we are entering a new age of information, and Knowledge plays a key role in this age. so the importance of Knowledge should never be neglected. in my college, we are offered many basic courses related to our major. from these courses, we gain much Knowledge, which will be beneficial to solving the problems in our future jobs. take myself as an example, majored in architecture, i have learned much Knowledge about architecture and engineering drawing. such Knowledge is really helpful to my future job. therefore, the acquisition of Knowledge lays a solid foundation for our skills and abilities.

second, the training of working skills is the keystone to us. as vocational college students, most of us will work in the front line of production. thus, working skills are of great importance to us. in our college, besides1

theoretical courses, we also have many practical courses. sometimes, we even work in factories temporarily, where we can apply our Knowledge to practical situations. thus, our skills can be enhanced. recently, i find the teaching methods of our teachers are changing. they emphasize more on the training of our skills. they try to train our specific skills in each period of class.

last, the cultivation of ability is our final purpose. it is not only our

students’ final purpose, but also the ultimate goal of vocational education. the acquisition of Knowledge and the training of skills are all centered on the cultivation of abilities that we should have to be engaged in certain social activities. unfortunately, we often do not consider the actual skills and abilities that employers want. most of the time, we think in terms of all-college requirements, requirements in our major, and what we need to do to graduate. we often miss the connections between what we are

doing in college and what we will need to do once we graduate. thus, we should ask ourselves about the abilities we are gaining in our class, and the internships and real world application of our learning. we should have the ability to apply our learning to our life.

to sum up, in this global century, every student – not just the fortunate few – will need wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary Knowledge, higher-level skills, and a demonstrated ability to apply Knowledge to

complex problems. only with the above three weapon can we survive the fierce competition in the future.

we can’t ignore the fact that the the total amount and depth of Knowledge of human society can shock anyone who comes from the ancient society: we explore petroleum, fly to the moon and even study the atom. but we can’t have a philosopher better than socrates, plato,or aristotle. it because that Knowledge can be accumulated, if human have a foundation, we can accumulate Knowledge through experiments and observations. wisdom is not. it can’t develop with the development of the data confirmed. in short, wisdom is not science.

the function of wisdom is to lead and control Knowledge. without wisdom, science will control us not be controlled by human. we will be mad for the power of Knowledge. we may study arms or drug to satisfy our own desires. this kind of Knowledge will destroy us. thanks to the wisdom that god gives us as a gift, our affection can be controlled. at the same time, we can see what our Knowledge systems are actually look like.

having the wisdom , we can use Knowledge more accurately,safer and enjoy the Knowledge what we have accumulated. until today, we still need study wisdom from ancient greek philosopher or renaissance philosopher to keep our society developing.

what college education means to me.

the title of my speech is “what college education means to me” reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, i come to realize how much it has shaped me.

for me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.

with great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated Knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. by dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, i’ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. how can i best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? my one year’s experience as a part-time english teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, i have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, i feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that i ’m on the right way.

and more importantly, college education has set up not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations. by interacting with friends of common beliefs, i’ve acquired skills of relating to other people.

now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,i’m still not in the position to tell what’s waiting ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardent companions of sailing in the sea of society, i’m ready to be a great sea-explorer.
