淺談英語翻譯技術分離Comment:
A Brief Talk about the Translation Technique of Separation
The author’s main purpose of writing this article is to share with the readers about his own experiences in taking part in Fellowship. In the context, he introduced the Fellowship, a youth minister, Bob Mutton, and himself. After reading, more precisely, say, translation of this essay, a lot of new knowledge emerges in my mind, which included two aspects.
First, in terms of the context, I’ve learned that what the Fellowship were like and the growth process of children in church-affiliated school. Second, also the most helpful gain is some experiences that combined both theory and practice, which I had in the process of translation.
Translation used to be regarded as a sheer linguistic activity and it involved nothing but transforming words and sentences of one language into the counterparts of another language. In deed, according to Marianne Lederer, the entire process of translation is a triangle process consisting of comprehension, divorce from the linguistic shell of the original and reproduction. The object of translation is not only language, but also information herein conveyed.
It will be seen from this that translation is a semantic translation, a communicative translation rather than a word-for-word translation. Due to the vast differences between Chinese and English in the field of language, culture and ways of speech expression, generally regard that translation techniques required applying in doing translation to perfect the version. In the translation I have done, I had resorted to several sorts of commonly used translation techniques such as separation, conversion, omission and repetition. Here, I will just say a few words about the translation technique of separation.
Since long sentences generally are regarded as obstacle in doing translation, separation is used to divide the long sentence into short sentences or independent sentences according to the meaning groups. In the translation of long and complex English sentences, use separation has two advantages: First, reserve the English order and reduce the possibility of translation omission. Second, separation is convenient for the substitute of long and short sentences. All in one, Chinese tends to use short sentences in that it is easy to reach coherence and meaning clearness. I will talk about separation, which used in this article in four aspects and follow some examples to support it.
1 Separating before conjunctions
1.1 We’d seen each other in miniature sports coats and clip-on ties or in plaid jumpers with velveteen bows, ‖and we spent long minutes sitting in pews and staring at each other’s defenseless parents while they worshipped, ‖and one morning in the church basement, during a we’d all watched a little girl in white tights wet herself dramatically.
我們穿同樣的小型運動服,系可用夾子夾住的領帶,或穿着格子花樣的棉絨揹帶褲,褲子上綴有蝴蝶結。‖我們在教堂裏看父母們長時間虔誠地祈禱。‖一天早晨我們在教堂大廳裏精神飽滿地唱:“耶穌保佑小孩”時,看見一個穿白色衣服的女孩因過於緊張把自己尿溼了。
1.2 My father, who hated all things military, was happy to excuse me from the scouts, ‖ but he insisted that I participate in some activity, and my mother suggested Fellowship.
父親討厭一切和軍隊有關的東西,很高興我撤去偵察兵的職務。‖他堅持讓我參加一些活動,媽媽建議我參加集會。
1.3 In Shannondale the next summer, I was playing cards with the seventh grader MacDonald, a feline-mannered girl whose granny glasses and Carole king frizz both attracted me and made me nervous,‖and in a moment of Beanish inspiration I decided it would be a funny joke to steal a look at MacDonald’s cards while she was in the bath room.
第二年夏天我在夏諾德跟一個七年級的女生麥當娜玩牌,這個像貓一樣的女孩,戴着老花鏡,留着卡洛金式的捲髮,這些既吸引我又使我感到緊張。‖我突發奇想決定開一個玩笑:等她洗澡時偷看一下她的牌。
2 Separating before relative pronouns
2.1 Floating on the Current, I marveled at every green vista: “Son of a bitch!” This irritated my canoe mate, Shoulberg, ‖who, with each repetition, responded no less mechanically, “Yes, you certainly are one.”
在卡倫特河上划槳時,我對每一處綠色的景物都感到驚奇:“狗孃養的!”我這樣做激怒了與我一起劃獨木舟的同伴肖伯格。‖他對我說的每一句重複的話都機械地迴應:“是的,你就是。”
2.2 Although they were obviously my enemies, I envied them their long hair and their rebellious clothes, ‖which I wasn’t allowed to have, and I half admired the purity of their adolescent anger, ‖which contrasted with my own muddle of self-consciousness and silliness and posturing.
雖然我和他們有點過節,但是我很羨慕他們的長頭髮以及反叛性的衣服。‖這些東西是我無法擁有的,我還羨慕他們那種朝氣蓬勃的純真。‖這種純真與我的裝模作樣截然不同。
2.3 He’d been a bad boy in high school, a pursuer of girls in the hulking ’49 Buick convertible ‖that he and his father, a machinist, had fixed up.
馬頓**中時很不聽話,經常在可改裝的、笨重的四九牌別克車上與女孩子調情。‖這輛車是馬頓和他父親一起組裝而成的,他父親是一個機械工人。
3 Separating before relative adverbs
3.1 On a confirmation retreat, if you were riding in his car‖when he stopped to buy communion supplies, he turned to you like a peer and ask you for your help:“ What kind of wine should I be looking for? ”
在一次獲得批准的活動中,他停車去爲教會購買食物。‖當時,如果你在車上,他會像一個地位與你相等的人一樣問你:“什麼酒好喝?”
3.2 He had a squawky voice and a slide-rule sensibility and an all-around rough time in Fellowship, ‖where the prevailing ethic of honesty and personal growth licensed kids like Peppel to shout, “Jesus Christ! You’re not just clumsy physically, you’re clumsy with other people’s feelings! You’ve got to learn how to watch out for other people!”
他聲音刺耳,性格古怪,在集會裏過了一段苦日子。‖集會提倡誠實的道德,而個人成長的經歷使得一些男孩像佩泊之類的會大叫:“耶穌基督!你雖然四肢發達,但反應遲鈍,你應該學會關注別人!”
3.3 I felt like a little child who’d spent the weekend doing silly feckless things (Four Square!)‖while serious grown up shit was going down elsewhere.
我感覺像一個小孩週末做了愚蠢的毫無意義的事情(四方形遊戲!)。‖僞裝嚴肅的成人在哪都受歡迎。
4 Separating before verbs
4.1There was a clutch of adoring girls who practically lived in Mutton’s office, ‖vying for space on his beat-up sofa beneath his psychedelic Jesus poster.
馬頓的辦公室裏經常擠滿了愛慕他的女孩。‖她們每次都在搶放在耶穌畫像下面那張破舊沙發的位置。
4.2 They queued up outside his office door, waiting for individual conferences, ‖suffering for not being the lucky person done with him behind his closed door , and feeling that not even the joy of finally getting into his office could compensate for the pain of waiting.
他們在馬頓的辦公室門外排隊,等待單獨的交談。‖因不能成爲在關門之後與他單獨在一起的那個幸運的人而感到痛苦,甚至連最後能夠進去的快**無法彌補等待的煎熬。
4.3 Bean, who was also in Boy Scouts, quit Fellowship soon after this, ‖leaving me and my own Clumsiness to become inviting targets for other peoples’ honesty.
比恩也是一個男偵察兵,發生那件事之後很快離開了集會。‖他留下笨拙的我成爲別人取笑的對象。
These examples that suggested above represent the translation technique of separation, which help me finishing the whole paper, there are still other difficulties I found during the process of translation. For example, I fail to translate “ Jesus Loves the Little children”; “The Needle and the Damage Done”; “Any Number can Die”; and Missouri schoolyard pot in 1973 was a weak, seedy product, and users had to take so many hits that they came inside reeking the smoke the way the Physical-science room reeked once a year, after the Distillation of Wood. And so on.
According to Yan Fu, a Chinese famous translator: faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance are the translation standard. Restricted by my poor translation experiences, there are some insufficient points in this work. As long as I could study diligently and train myself the hard way, I believe the capacity of doing translation could become more and more mature along with the development of translation practice; in another words: “Practice makes perfect”.
