A Good Language Teacher
Someone just with an excellent command of a foreign language may not be a good language teacher. Similarly, someone just with the elements that contribute to a qualified teacher may not be a good language teacher, either. Therefore, only when you combine these two items well can you be a good language teacher.
First, when comes to the various elements that contribute to the qualities of a good teacher, Parrot had categorized them into four groups: ethic devotion, professional qualities and personal qualities and personal styles . To be a good language teacher, he should have ethic devotion, that’s to say, for example, he may be disciplined. If he is always late for class, do not obey the rule of school, how can he set a disciplined example for his students? He can have his personal qualities. When he is standing on the stage, he could have his own style, such as humorous and energetic atmosphere. The first step of it is language development, due to the changing feature of language, there will be no end of language development. So, a teacher should keep learning and revising his outdated notion on time. The second step involves three sub-stages: learning, practice and reflection. The learning stage is actually the preparation: learning from other’s experience, learning the received knowledge and learning from one’s own experiences as a learner. Don’t stop learning steps. Both experimental knowledge and received knowledge are useful when a teacher goes to real practice. One is the pre-service education under the supervision of instructions to prepare for his class. The other is to go to the real classroom to be a real teacher. Next is to reflect on his teaching work, also you can make it at the time of teaching. A teacher can benefit a lot from the reflection of his work. Then he can revise his teaching, do a better practice. Following this step, he continues to reflect seriously. Keeping on reflecting and practicing is either vital or difficult. As a result, owing to the circulation, a teacher can reach his final goal- the professional competence.
